Goodreads Summary:
New York, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C., have been abandoned.

The Bill of Rights has been revoked, and replaced with the Moral Statutes.

There are no more police—instead, there are soldiers. There are no more fines for bad behavior—instead, there are arrests, trials, and maybe worse. People who get arrested usually don't come back.

Seventeen-year-old Ember Miller is old enough to remember that things weren't always this way. Living with her rebellious single mother, it's hard for her to forget that people weren't always arrested for reading the wrong books or staying out after dark. It's hard to forget that life in the United States used to be different.

Ember has perfected the art of keeping a low profile. She knows how to get the things she needs, like food stamps and hand-me-down clothes, and how to pass the random home inspections by the military. Her life is as close to peaceful as circumstances allow.

That is, until her mother is arrested for noncompliance with Article 5 of the Moral Statutes. And one of the arresting officers is none other than Chase Jennings—the only boy Ember has ever loved.

Characters
Ember Miller : Main protagonist and narrator of the story. She’s put into something like a girls home after it’s discovered that her mother had broken Article 5 (having a child without being married).

Chase Jennings: Chase is a former neighbor of Ember’s and it’s hinted that they once had a romantic relationship. He is currently a FBR soldier, but he goes AWOL in order to help Ember reach a safehouse in the South.

Tucker Morris: A member of The Knoxville Detention Center. He’s sort of the villain of the story, and has no sense of right or wrong.

Sean Banks: Sean is a member of the resistance.

Setting
The characters are on the move for the majority of the novel.

Knoxville, Tennessee - Chase and Ember’s hometown.

Where The Book Left Off
At the end of book one Ember and Chase escape the detention center after facing off with Tucker.  Ember was able to get the both of them out of there and almost shoots Tucker, but remembers her mother and decides not to. The two of them go back to find Sean and the other rebels.  She tells Sean that Rebecca is in Chicago and then Chase and Ember sit hand in hand and watch the sunset.
